Giant marionettes are taking over the streets of Liverpool, England this weekend.

The giants are animated by handlers from the French street theatre company Royal De Luxe, who like to call themselves Lilliputians. They’re in Liverpool for a three-day “performance called Sea Odyssey: The Giant Spectacular”.

“Sea Odyssey” is a performance linked to the hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which was registered in Liverpool.

It tells the true story of a young girl who sent a letter to her father, who was a steward on the Titanic.

The letter never reached him, and is now displayed in Liverpool’s Merseyside Maritime Museum. One of Royal De Luxe’s giants, a 30-foot female, plays the role of the girl who wrote the letter.

Lisa Mullins hears about the event from Judith Feather, head of events for Liverpool City Council.
