Whale Alert: A New Smart App to Save Endangered Whales

The World

For the Geo Quiz, we are tracking North Atlantic Right whales.

These endangered giants migrate along the North American coast from Nova Scotia to Florida.

Right about this time of the year, they arrive at their summer feeding grounds and that is the place we would like you to name.

It is a shallow patch of nutrient-rich ocean between Cape Ann and Cape Cod.

This 850-square mile national marine sanctuary has specially designed acoustic buoys for listening to the calls of the right whales.

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is the answer to the Geo Quiz.

Anchor Marco Werman talks to David Wiley, NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary research coordinator, about a new smart app called “Whale Alert!” that has been designed to help prevent ships from colliding with endangered North Atlantic Right Whales.
