Ceremony Marks 59th Anniversary of Korean War Armistice

A ceremony figures in our Geo Quiz but not an Olympic one.

The ceremony we’re interested in involved military officials not athletes. This military ceremony took place today in a border village on the Korean peninsula.

It marked the 59th anniversary of the armistice that put the Korean War on hold. No peace treaty was ever signed so technically the two Koreas are still at war. Soldiers still fortify the line of demarcation between the North and South, which means this village we want you to name is located along one of the world’s most heavily defended borders.

US Korea Forces Commander General James Thurman was on hand:

“I hope that at some point we can start discussions again so we could resolve the situation and eventually get to a time when we don’t have a de-militarised zone. I think that would be very important. It’s about peace and prosperity of people. “

For now though, Panmunjom remains a flashpoint along one of the world’s most heavily fortified borders.
