Zimbabwe uncertainty

The World

There are large numbers of rumors, claims of negotiations, claims of Mugabe stepping down, claims of a possible runoff, but none of it is confirmed. The Central Election Commission has yet to release any solid information. So with no hard information, everyone is going to be talking as people wait to hear what the final word is. (This would be an astonishing turnaround for a leader who said he would remain in power at any cost.) Very true. It would be monumental if he has agreed to resign. (What pressure is on Mugabe from the US?) It’s something he’s never responded to in the past. Of course there has been that kind of pressure from the US and the international community. If this manages to have some effect on him, that too is monumental. (What about the role of the security forces in Zimbabwe? Are the police and army supporting Mugabe and would they support an opposition leader?) They’ve always stood by Mugabe and they’ve shared the same history as Mugabe. They were in this together and it’s hard to see they would get out of this together, unless there was an immunity deal or something.
