Mali is slowly recovering from a conflict in the north where Islamic extremists had taken over and imposed sharia law.

That included a ban on music.

The Islamists are now gone and the ban on music was lifted, but that doesn’t mean musicians there are doing well.

British journalist Andy Morgan used to manage the Malian Touareg band, Tinariwen.

He’s just published a book titled “Music, Culture and Conflict in Mali.”
