US reaction to Afghan president’s warnings

The World

During the joint news conference, Bush was asked if he supported Karzai’s statements about cross-border raids into Pakistan. He answered cautiously because both countries are allies of the US. Bush was also asked about the government in Pakistan and whether they’re appeasing terrorist organizations by have negotiations with them. Bush again answered cautiously. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister said Karzai’s statements were irresponsible and Pakistan will defend its territorial sovereignty. The outgoing NATO commander in Afghanistan also recently blamed Pakistan for an uptick in violence in the border regions, and also said the NATO force doesn’t have enough resources. But Prime Minister Brown said Britain will be sending more troops to Afghanistan. The troop increase is not big but it would raise the total number of British troops in Afghanistan to more than 8,000 for the first time.
