Jack Handey

Fair Game
The World

Jack Handey was a staff writer on Saturday Night Live for many years, where he created “Deep Thoughts” – the dark and surreal ramblings that appeared as text onscreen, like some kind of Hallmark card on acid. He went on to write a series of Deep Thoughts books, and humor essays for The New Yorker, Playboy, and other magazines. Despite the rumors that he is not a real person, he is actually here with us today. And he’s come out with a new book of essays called What I’d Say to the Martians And Other Veiled Threats. Faith Salie speaks with the exciting and mysterious Jack Handey on Fair Game.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
