Iraq a big issue for young voters in Wisconsin

These U of Wisconsin students of spending their Saturday morning getting word out about Barack Obama. They look over a map for where likely supporters might live. The two sophomores say they’re thrilled to be here to support Obama. They say they support him largely for his stance on Iraq, which he repeated last week on the UW Campus. Chelsea Clinton also spoke at UW last week and defended her mother’s 2002 vote to authorize the use of force in Iraq. She says it was based on best available evidence about Iraq at the time. A Pew Research poll earlier this month shows that Iraq is the top issue for more younger and elderly voters than it is for their middle aged counterparts. This professor at UW Madison says that makes sense, especially for college students because 9/11 came at a time when their political consciousness was coming of age. Clinton and Obama back a phased withdrawal from Iraq. This UW Madison sophomore has praised McCain’s stance on Iraq in student newspapers. In the 2006 midterm elections, Wisconsin’s turnout of young voters was among the highest in the country.
