This next story it’s about musicians from Zimbabwe, a country not filled with a lot of hope these days. The economy’s in freefall.

Half the population relies on international food aid. And the president Robert Mugabe is threatening to bypass a power-sharing deal with the opposition and retain control.

Still, there are some Zimbabweans who voice hope. Take the band Liyana.

Its eight members are all physically disabled. They’re currently on tour in the U.S.

Reporter Lonny Shavelson caught up with them in northern California, and he spoke with Liyana’s lead singer Prudence Mabhena.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
