Getting Americans to read Swedish literature

If Americans aren’t getting enough world literature, perhaps one could start in Sweden, the home of the Nobel Prize. One problem: there isn’t much Swedish literature translated into English and most of it has been translated by British translators, says this American translator living in Sweden. He says he is translating a novel specifically for an American audience. However, America’s market for American authors is already big and that makes the task of getting Swedes in difficult, not to mention the translation issues. The translator does accept the notion that Americans won’t get to know much of the rest of the world if Americans don’t read global novels. But that doesn’t mean American writers are necessarily worse than international authors.
