Inside the Beltway, debate rages on about the size of the federal budget. But whatever is finally agreed, the real pain will be felt far from Washington – it’ll play out in much poorer parts of the country. Kentucky, for example, relies heavily on government spending. For every dollar it raises in taxes, it gets back one and a half. Still its Republican politicians, some of whom have excelled at bringing home federal money for projects in their districts, are all now preaching the doctrine of fiscal discipline. Our partner the BBC has been to Somerset, KY to see how the debate is playing out in the Bluesgrass State.
