We wanted to challenge you this summer, but not in the fashion we typically do. This time, we wanted you to share something old — something you made when you were a teenager. We wanted to hear you rock.
For Studio 360’s Battle of the High School Bands, we asked for the music you made between your freshman and senior years of high school — whether you graduated before we landed on the moon or since Curiosity landed on Mars. As usual, you didn’t disappoint. We ended up with more than 300 submissions pulled from old vinyl and cassette tapes, ripped from CDs, and uploaded directly from iTunes. There was psychedelic 60s pop, poppy punk from the 80s, and some big beats of recent vintage — so much superlative tunage we couldn’t just make one mixtape of the best songs. So we made two.
