Zimbabwean Global Music Artist Chiwoniso Dies

Zimbabwean artist Chiwoniso Maraire died last night at the age of 37.

Chiwoniso was a singer/songwriter and an accomplished player of the mbira, a traditional African instrument also known as the thumb piano.

Chiwoniso’s music was an eclectic mix of genres.

Her latest recording was a yet-to-be-released collaboration with jazz saxophonist Max Wild.

“No other Zimbabwean female artist has reached that kind of international acclaim,” Wild said. “She’s considered one of the greatest female vocalists in world music.”

Chiwoniso Maraire was 37 years old.
