Zimbabwean artist Chiwoniso Maraire died last night at the age of 37.
Chiwoniso was a singer/songwriter and an accomplished player of the mbira, a traditional African instrument also known as the thumb piano.
Chiwoniso’s music was an eclectic mix of genres.
Her latest recording was a yet-to-be-released collaboration with jazz saxophonist Max Wild.
“No other Zimbabwean female artist has reached that kind of international acclaim,” Wild said. “She’s considered one of the greatest female vocalists in world music.”
Chiwoniso Maraire was 37 years old.
