Loretta Lopez, teen winner of Scholastic Writing Award

The World

Tonight the most talented young writers and artists in America will gather on stage at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, where they will be awarded at the Scholastic Art and Writing’s Portfolio Gold Award.

Awardees join the ranks of distinguished past recipients like Andy Warhol, Zac Posen, Joyce Carol Oates and John Lithgow ? each of whom received recognition when they were in high school. We speak with high school senior Loretta Lopez, of Guadalajara, Mexico, where she attends the American School Foundation of Guadalajara. Loretta is one of the 15 recipients of this year’s award.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
