Horsemeat debate in France

This woman works for an animals’ rights organization. She says eating horsemeat just strikes her as wrong; it represents only 2% of the meat eaten in France. Her foundation has been waging an aggressive campaign against eating horsemeat. So far about 20 individual supermarkets have agreed to stop carrying it. horsemeat used to be seen as the meat of the working class and was especially popular in the lean times after World War II, but it’s consumption has been declining and it’s now more expensive than beef, lamb or pork. Still those who want their horsemeat can still find it at certain butchers and supermarkets. This man sells horsemeat and says it’s the perfect meat. His group has been waging its own aggressive PR campaign with some positive results. He respects the work of animals’ rights groups but says their complaints don’t apply to horsemeat, because they don’t mistreat their animals. France imports about 85% of its horsemeat and the US used to be its biggest supplier but the last horsemeat supplier in the US closed last year so France has turned to other suppliers, a demand some here hope will soon die out.
