This is the result of two successive seasons of drought, failed crops, and indifference from the government. The government admits that 4.7 million of its citizens are on the brink of starvation, but aid agencies are convinced the real number is twice that. The President of Ethiopia doesn’t want to focus on those figures, but instead of a bloody occupation war in neighboring Somalia. In this town, some 40% of children are said to be malnourished. The government hasn’t done anything, says this aid worker. Embarrassed by the scope of the problem, the government has banned foreign journalists from visiting feeding centers where the worst patients are, so we visited this out patient clinic run by Doctors Without Borders. Forty children have starved to death in this town.
