East Coast prepares for Hurricane Irene

The World

Between the earthquake on Tuesday and the hurricane heading our way, the East Coast has been suffering at the hands of Mother Nature this week, and it’s only going to continue through the weekend. Hurricane Irene hammered the Bahamas and Florida on Thursday, and the Category 3 storm is set to hit North Carolina on Saturday before blasting up the East Coast through the weekend.  North Carolina has already issued evacuation orders for residents along the coast. Robyn Tomlin,  executive editor of The Star News in Wilmington, N.C.,  speaks with us about  how the state is preparing for the storm. Curtis is  a freelance writer and editor based in Charlotte, N.C.  Anita Kumar, staff writer for The  Washington Post, and Doug Doyle, news director of WBGO, Newark Public Radio, also join us.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
