As the civil unrest moves from regime changing to nation building in Egypt, the challenge of protecting minorities, religious and ethnic has come to the fore. Protests turned violent Wednesday in Cairo, with men attacking women and Muslims attacking Christians. Hundreds of Egyptian women, who were demonstrating to demand equal rights, were met with verbal and physical abuse. Thousands of Christians also took to the streets, demonstrating against persecution they believe they are receiving from the Muslim majority. Dalia Ziada is an Egyptian blogger and the regional Director of the American Islamic Congress. She witnessed the violence during Wednesday’s demonstrations.
