This song from 1984 which is on tonight’s setlist forged a link between music and apartheid. It was written by The Specials. Denzel Washington introduced another concert in 1990. Mandela’s release from prison in 1994 also highlighted music. When President Mandela visited London in 1996 there was another concert. Mandela retired in 1999, but the music continued and London celebrated 7 years of democracy in South Africa with another concert. Two years ago Mandela started hosting his own concerts to spread awareness of HIV/AIDS.
At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.
