Antigua honeymoon murders: two men convicted

Two men were convicted Thursday of murdering a British couple, Ben and Catherine Mullany, who were honeymooning in Antigua in 2008.

A jury in Antigua's High Court in St John's found Kaniel Martin, 23, and Avie Howell, 20, guilty of shooting the couple in the back of their head during a raid on their chalet, the Guardian reports.

The recently married couple, both 31, were staying at the five-star Cocos Hotel. It was July 27, 2008, the final day of their two-week honeymoon, when they were shot, the BBC reports.  Catherine Mullany, who was studying physiotherapy, died instantly. Ben Mullany, a doctor, was flown back to south Wales but eventually did not survive.

Two weeks after the killings, Martin and Howell killed a shopkeeper, Woneta Anderson.

"There is no joy at today's verdict, just a sense of relief that after three years of waiting there is justice for our children, and for Woneta Anderson and her family," a statement from the Mullany family said.

"These two individuals can never again inflict the same anguish and devastation to any other family as they have to ours."

Their murders attracted worldwide attention, and close to 900 people attended a memorial service at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff for the couple in 2008.
