#94. @realDonaldTrump, More than 80% of gun owners say they would support some new restrictions on guns. Do you? #100days100qs
The National Rifle Association is scheduled to hold its annual convention in Atlanta this week, with a planned address from President Donald Trump. It comes on the heels of a new poll by Americans for Responsible Solutions, the PAC created by Gabrielle Giffords — the former Arizona representative who was shot while holding a town hall meeting six years ago.
The poll found that a majority of gun owners think the NRA is controlled by lobbyists and special interests and has lost sight of its dedication to gun safety.
Earlier in our #100Days100Qs project, we asked this question of the president: How will you address the toll gun violence is taking in American schools and American cities? In that question, we pointed to the NRA's efforts to block CDC efforts to study gun violence. Studies conducted by National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and the CDC showed that having a gun in the home increases the risk of homicide.
According to a report by Politico, the poll found:
These numbers are in stark contrast to the videos and messages from the NRA website. One video on the site declared than gun owner’s rights are, “under attack.”
Messages to legislators, their members and gun owners from last year accused President Barack Obama of trying to "stir up fear" with gun legislation. Donald Trump has been friendlier to the NRA — he spoke at last year's convention and received the group's endorsement. But, in the past Trump has called for a ban on assault style weapons — something he now calls a "total failure"
At the convention last year he told NRA members "The Second Amendment is on the ballot in November," he later added. "The only way to save our Second Amendment is to vote for a person that you all know named Donald Trump." Now that he's president, we're wondering what he thinks of the views of a majority of gun owners. Click here to tweet the question to the president.
