Hong Kong: 3D porn makes its debut

You'll feel like you are truly in on the action.

According to writer and producer Stephen Shiu, the world's first 3D porn film — "Sex and Zen 3D: Extreme Ecstasy" — "will leave audiences feeling like they are sitting right there at the edge of the bed," he told The Guardian.

The film, directed by Hong Konger Christopher Sun, packed cinemas across Hong Kong yesterday as it made its debut, and is looking to do the same in Taiwan today. The Guardian reports that 70 percent of the tickets have already been sold in advance of screenings in Hong Kong.

Moviegoers are apparently flocking from the mainland to Hong Kong and Taiwan to see the film — though it's not the first time that's happened. In 2007, mainlanders traveled to Hong Kong to see the uncensored version of Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution," which also included some graphic sex scenes.

Loosely based on "The Carnal Prayer Mat," a classic Chinese erotic text, the film follows a young man during the Ming Dynasty as he befriends a duke and embarks on a royal romp. The film is a remake of a Chinese movie from 1991, also called "Sex and Zen."

Some foresee a wave of 3D porn following this landmark event, and producers are already hinting at a sequel to the $2.6 million "Sex and Zen."

Italian director Tinto Brass is said to be planning a 3D version of his 1979 erotic classic "Caligula," and there are rumors of a 3D spoof called, "This Ain't Avatar XX."

But shooting in 3D is expensive, and whether such films can rake in enough revenue to revive an industry hit hard by free internet porn remains an open question.

The more pressing question: What to do when your 3D glasses get a little, um, steamy?
