Occupy Wall Street has raised nearly $300K: report

GlobalPost

Occupy Wall Street, which spread worldwide this weekend, has raised almost $300,000 in cash, according to the Associated Press.

Bill Dobbs, a press liaison for Occupy Wall Street, told the AP that the money has been raised through the OccupyWallSt.org website (which has a prominent "donate" button) and through donations collected in person at Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan, where the movement is based.

The money has been deposited in an account at Amalgamated Bank, "the only 100 percent union-owned bank in the United States."

Occupy Wall Street has also obtained storage space in building close to Zuccotti Park, the AP reports. The space was donated by the United Federation of Teachers, and one member of the group told the AP that goods were being stored there "for a long-term occupation."

Figures on the Occupy Wall Street website break down the recipients of $256,500 in donations. Around $150,000 has been donated to the New York City General Assembly General Fund & Material Donations, while a Kickstarter.com fund-raiser for the Occupied Wall Street Journal, a newspaper put out by movement members, has raised around $75,000. Occupy Boston has raised around $16,000, while Occupy New Orleans has raised around $1,000.

The website also states that Occupy Wall Street's PR group is looking for an apartment near Zuccotti.

"The public relations team is looking for an apartment in Manhattan's financial district with modest furnishings (like bunk beds) that can shelter/shower 6+ full-time activists working on #OWS," the website says. "If you have the means to donate such a space, please email: apartment@occupywallst.org."
