A 100-year-old man has become the oldest person to run a marathon, after crossing finish line of the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in Canada on Sunday.

British man Fauja Singh booked a spot in the Guinness World Book of Records, when he finished in eight hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds.

London’s Daily Telegraph reported that the Indian-born Singh, from Ilford, east London, finished in 3850th place – ahead of five other competitors.

Singh finished the race more than six hours after Kenya's Kenneth Mungara won the event for the fourth straight year.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Singh is no stranger to world records, having previously held the title of fastest marathon runner in the 90-plus category (he covered the distance in five hours, 40 minutes and 1 second, at the age of 92).

The BBC reported that family, friends and supporters were on hand to cheer Singh at the Toronto finish line.

His coach and translator Harmander Singh said:

Beating his original prediction, he's overjoyed. Earlier, just before we came around the (final) corner, he said, 'Achieving this will be like getting married again.'

Reports say that Singh, a Punjab farmer who moved to Britain in the 1960s, took up running 11 years ago after his wife and son died.

Singh credits ginger curry, tea and "being happy" for his longevity and stamina.
