A man was found guilty of attempted murder in England on Monday and faces jail time after burying his fiancée alive in a cardboard box in the woods, the BBC reported.

Marcin Kasprzak attacked Michelina Lewandowska, 27, his future bride and the mother of his son, with a Taser gun in their home before bounding and gagging her with tape, the Daily Telegraph reported. He then stuffed her body into a cardboard box and buried her in the woods near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

She was left there to suffocate but Lewandowska managed to escape by using her engagement ring to cut the tape around her legs and then used it to tear the box apart, she testified in court, the Associated Press reported. She was buried in about four inches of soil. After she managed to escape, she flagged down a passing car that took her home.

Kasprzak attempted to murder his girlfriend after their relationship ended and he feared she would take their three-year-old son Jakub back to Poland, their home country, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Although Kasprzak denied it was attempted murder, he was found guilty and will be sentenced in January, the AP reported. He told the court he only meant to scare his fiancee and never intended on killing her, the Mirror reported. Patryk Borys, 18, was also on trial for the same charge, but was cleared. Both men admitted to kidnapping at a previous meeting and the judge ordered a reported to be prepared on Borys, the Mirror reported.
Lewandowska said she feared she would die inside of the cardboard box and read a statement outside of the court.

“I prayed to God to help me to survive so that I could look after my young son. The thought of my son gave me the strength to fight my way out of the box and save myself,” said Lewandowska, the Daily Mail reported. The couple had moved to England from Poland to find work.
