Excedrin users shell out hundreds for the rare drug

Excedrin prices have been skyrocketing lately due to a recall that has caused a shortage of the pain drug.

The Tucson Citizen reported that on Wednesday this week, a package of 50 two-tablet packs of Excedrin Extra Strength were being sold for $144.95 on Amazon.com. 

According to the same newspaper, a similar package of Excedrin Migraine was selling for $245.99. this week.

Before the recall, the price for a package of Excedrin went for under $10.

Excedrin, used by migraine sufferers, was recalled after some bottles of the drug had been contaminated with other prescription painkillers, reported WLS.

Many have become reliant on the drug to treat their migraines.

“For patients that find that this is what relieves their headache, they’re willing to pay the extra amount of money to get the headache relief and to be able to function daily,” Paula Horn of the Allegheny General Hospital pharmacy told a local CBS affiliate.

According to ABC, doctors have warned about purchasing medications from third parties over the internet.

The drugmaker Novartis says it may continue with limited shipments of the drug in the second half of next year.
