If you want to spend the rest of your afternoon panicking about the impending robot apocalypse, follow #DoD2015 on Twitter.
Today, for the first time, the US Department of Defense is hosting a science fair. They're calling it "lab day."
That sounds innocuous enough, but as you can probably guess, there won't be any vinegar volcanoes — unless someone at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory has figured out how to weaponize them. But there will be lots of killer robots and other terrifying technologies designed to win the wars of the future. Great.
If you happen to have access to the Pentagon Center Courtyard you'll get to enjoy an event the DoD describes this way:
The event will showcase innovations from more than 60 Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and medical laboratories and engineering centers across the country. More than 100 exhibits will be featured including the Army High-Energy Laser mobile display, Air Force BATMAN high tech head-mounted display, helmet research that protects from and helps heal traumatic brain injuries, Navy MAGIC CARPET enhanced flight controls, and Marine semi-autonomous FERRET robotic system. Exhibits will be open to Members of Congress, STEM-participating high schools, Pentagon employees, media and special guests.
But if you can't get there, the DoD is making it easy for you to follow along, since social media is apparently one of the futuristic technologies their embracing.
Among other things, you'll learn that the DoD uses exclamation points to sound fun, webby, and accessible.
You'll learn that the DoD knows how to use Vine.
You'll also see lots of photos of robots like these.
And this:
And, like any science fair, you'll see people standing around at booths.
Have fun!
