Number of Displaced Surge as Conflict in Syria Continues

According to the United Nations, the 2012 refugee level was the highest it’s been since 1994. One of the hardest hit areas is Syria, where more than a quarter of the population has already been displaced–and that number is only expected to grow.
Throughout Syria’s two-year civil war, more than 5.75 million Syrians have been displaced. Many have fled to neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon, but a staggering 4.25 million remain in Syria.
Increasing aid to these internally displaced Syrians is vital to regional stability, according to Megan Bradley, fellow at the Brookings-LSE Project on Internal Displacement.
She recently wrote about this issue for The Christian Science Monitor and joins us today to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis in Syria and elsewhere, including Mali and the Congo.
