New TV Show Aims to Change Image of North Korean Defectors

The World

South Koreans look on refugees from the North with disdain. So many defectors live in poverty and isolation.

Now, there is a new TV show in South Korea aimed at challenging prejudice about North Koreans.

“Now on My Way to Meet You,” a hybrid talk and talent show in which roughly a dozen North Korean women who fled from their communist homeland appear, has grown increasing popular over the last few months via its mix of humour and tears, mingling serious discussions such as stories of escape with lighter fare such as talk about which men make the best husbands.

The BBC’s Lucy Williamson reports.
