Switching sides and breaking through at Sundance
The Sundance Film Festival kicked off in Park City, Utah, last night. We talk this morning with two directors whose films are featured this year about their big break and about crossing over (both literally and figuratively).
In the case of Tim Rutili, the crossing over came as he moved from one medium to another. Prior to making “All My Friends Are Funeral Singers” (a fictional film that follows the life of a psychic and the ghosts who help her do her work), Tim was best known as the frontman for the folk-rock band Califone.
And for Reed Cowan, the crossing over came as he changed his political ideology. Prior to making “8: The Mormon Proposition” (an examination of the role of the Mormon Church in endorsing California’s anti-gay marriage amendment, Proposition 8), Reed was a Mormon missionary.
