Nuala O’Faolain remembrance
A lot of people in Ireland wish O’Faolain had just piped down: why talk about her alcoholic mother, her philandering father, her own sexuality and aging and loneliness. 10 years ago we asked O’Faolain to read a segment from her book about her own aging. 10 years later O’Faolain was splitting her time between New York and Ireland and talking about life and death. in April she revealed to an audience in Ireland that she was dying from inoperable lung cancer. She said her life had gone dark: she no longer enjoyed reading, nature, or anything at all except music. O’Faolain died last week, she was 68 years old.
