Kids and antipsychotic drugs: are we over-prescribing?

The World

As parents struggle with their children’s behavior, more and more doctors are turning to antipsychotic drugs. Do our little ones need this much medication?

Reporting for The New York Times, Duff Wilson, profiles a mom and her son, who struggled with behavioral problems. Kyle Warren was in daycare when his problems began. After a series of misdiagnoses and many prescriptions, he was weaned off of the drug regimen and regained his sense of childlike self. Dr. Margaret Gleason is an assistant professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at Tulane University. She says that many kids are often overmedicated when they don’t receive adequate psychological assessments.
