The World

At dawn on Thursday morning, the guns around the Gaza Strip are supposed to fall silent. Israel is calling it a fragile understanding with Hamas, Hamas calls it a state of calm. Israel’s Defense Minister says this understanding could bring about long term quiet and even a prisoner exchange. Egypt has been mediating between the two sides for months and Hamas also says this could bring to other agreements. Israel might also ease restrictions at Gaza border crossings, but none of that might happen as earlier today Israel killed six Gaza gunmen and Hamas said there might be a response. The news of an agreement outraged some in Israel and gives legitimacy to Hamas, but other say Israel has nothing to lose. Both sides say the agreement could last days or months.
