The Iraq War claimed its 4,000th American soldier this weekend. The grim milestone brought attention back to an issue that has been somewhat off the radar lately, with media focused focused on racial gaffes, economic worries, and gubernatorial hookers.
It’s been easy to let the war slip out of our nation’s collective mind, because, let’s face it, shared sacrifice has not been a part of this war. If you’re not in the military or the family member of someone who is, chances are that the biggest impact the war’s had on your life was to make “Meet the Press” sort of repetitive.
That’s why tonight, when Dick Cheney told ABC News about the war – “The president carries the biggest burden, obviously” – he sounded like, well, a Dick.
Obviously it’s a terrible burden to have to send other people’s children to war, but we think we should all be able to agree it’s not as bad as having your own child go to war, or you know, having to go to war yourself. We all know the President has never fought, and the closest his children have ever come to desert warfare was the time Jenna got loaded on tequila at Lake Havasu.
It’s one thing for a whole bunch of old guys, most of whom have never fought, to lead us in to a war of choice. It’s another to tell the Americans who’ve been severely wounded or lost a loved one in your war how hard it is on YOU. Because the last time we checked no one’s ever died of feeling guilty.
Every day, reporters and producers at The World are hard at work bringing you human-centered news from across the globe. But we can’t do it without you. We need your support to ensure we can continue this work for another year.
