Categorizing Chinese South Africans as black

ML says Chinese South Africans are welcoming the ruling: they were seen as not being white enough to be white and they were not seen as black enough to benefit from policies enjoyed by black people. (So presumably during apartheid the Chinese wanted to be thought of as white and now they want to be thought of as black.) Not necessarily, some say they also fought apartheid. At the time the white minority government also discriminated against them as a non-white group, but then the same policies continued and they never benefited from the new South African policies. (Does the government have significant benefits to dole out?) That question remains to be answered.
