Energy company reaches federal settlement in connection to Upper Big Branch mine disaster
Alpha Natural Resources agreed to pay 31 families, two survivors and 29 families of the deceased, $1.5 million each, as well as to make millions in safety improvements and conduct millions in research to make mining safer at the Upper Big Branch mine and in general.
