The move comes after a week of drama on Capitol Hill in which House Republicans initially rejected the deal, before succumbing to pressure from other members of their party to pass it.
Republicans in the House of Representatives rejected legislation overwhelmingly backed by both parties in the Senate to extend the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits for millions of Americans.
