In December 2013, teacher and sound designer Gabriel Walker resolved to get back into music, with the goal of forming a band and performing a six-song set by the end of 2014.
June Update:
I’m excited to report that Jenrose Fitzgerald and I are working on mostly original material. Initially I thought it would be modern interpretations of American Songbook standards. Click on the player below to hear an audio collage of the demos in various stages of completion. Lyrics are in the works.
My voice is coming along nicely. I played a couple of gigs here in Maysville and they went well. I sang “Paper Moon,” the Tom Waits tune “Chocolate Jesus,” and played a bunch of chord melody pieces on the guitar. People were genuinely enthusiastic and surprised by my baritone voice. I am feeling more confident about singing and trusting my voice. I am continuing the work to improve my range and technique. But I still see my vocal role as one of support/background. My main focus is songwriting, arranging, and playing guitar.
Here’s the hang-up: I have yet to find a full time job in Louisville. I have been through a couple of interviews, but no luck. I have signed on with Couchsurfing.com and am seeking a few couches to surf. I will spend a week or two in Louisville hitting all the music stores and galleries in search of work, looking at apartments, meeting with musicians, and working on music with Jenrose.
