Lynn Hershman Creates Roberta Breitmore

Studio 360

In the 1970s, Roberta Brietmore went to San Francisco, where she held various jobs, went on dates, and obtained credit cards — all the outside trappings of a single working life. But her existence was meticulously constructed and documented by her creator, the performance artist Lynn Hershman, who blurred the lines between art and life as she spent a decade playing Roberta a few days a week.
