Indonesia: how to wrangle a dying giraffe

These Agence France-Presse photos reveal the last days of Kliwon, a 30-year-old giraffe that died earlier this month at Indonesia's Surabaya Zoo.

Kligon's cause of death — a sickness derived from the 23-pound lump of plastic pulled from his stomach, according to the AP — is drawing scrutiny towards to zoo.

The plastic, AP reports, was a massive wad of food wrappers and wind-blown debris that landed in Kligon's fenced-in habitat. Yet another report calls Surabaya a "nightmare zoo" plagued by scant funding and tightly packed animal cages.
