BOSTON — The web wouldn't be the web without viral videos — those time-wasting gems that fly from YouTube to your grandmother's computer and everywhere in between.
2010 was, thankfully, no exception.
We at GlobalPost enjoy viral videos as much as the rest of you, from the Auto-Tune the News brilliance of Bed Intruder and Double Rainbow, to OK Go's Rube Goldberg Machine masterpiece.
But the phenomenon, of course, is not confined to the United States. So we searched the world for our five favorites in 2010.
Oh, and you're welcome.
1. From Russia, with la-la-la-la-love
Drop Lawrence Welk into Red Square and what might you get? Eduard Khil, and a viral sensation.
2. Sand art history in Kiev
Technically, this video came out in 2009. We don't care. Neither will you, once you click play.
3. Taiwanese boy sings like Whitney Houston
It wasn't quite a Susan Boyle-like phenomenon, but 24-year-old Lin Yu-Chun can also belt one out.
4. Chimpanzee riding on a Segway
Some videos defy description. This one comes from — where else — Japan.
5. A firefight in Kunar
Yes, we're a bit biased when it comes to this James Foley story, which debuted on GlobalPost in September. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a video that better captured the chaotic war in Afghanistan. Gripping stuff, all around.
