William and Kate’s royal wedding the 6th biggest web event ever (VIDEO)

The royal wedding took over trending topics, and a record number of people watched live video of the event. However, the Friday nuptials of Prince William and Catherine Middleton failed to make the top-5 web news events of all time — being topped by various sporting events and the 2010 U.S. midterm elections, according to Mashable.

Akamai, an Internet service provider whose network hosts some of the web’s largest news sites, ranked the wedding as the sixth-biggest event in internet history.

The top event remains a World Cup soccer match and the longest Wimbledon tennis match, which happened at the same time in June 2010.

Global Internet traffic on news about the Will and Kate's wedding peaked at 5.3 million page views per minute at about 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, compared with the more than 10.3 million people per minute clicking on news stories about those sporting events.

President Barack Obama's election in November 2008 drew 4.3 million page views per minute, according to Akamai.

The royals did better when it comes to live video, breaking a Livestream record by topping 300,000 concurrent viewers at 6 a.m. ET on Friday.

CEO Max Haot told Mashable that he expects “at least 2 million” unique viewers by the time the broadcast is done.

Livestream partnered with the Associated Press, UK Press Association, CBS and Entertainment Tonight for its coverage.

Akamai reported that “concurrent live streams of Royal Wedding on Akamai surpassed the 1.6M peak set by World Cup in June of 2010.”
