Goa: India’s sewage beach
It's India's original "party state" and the King of Good Times' favorite spot for showing off the chest hair and gold chains. But government scientists say the water in Goa isn't safe for that bikini.
According to a recent report by the Goa-based National Institute of Oceanography, the level of faecal coliform bacteria in water off the coast and in rivers was higher than the international benchmark, reports the New Age.
While officials told the paper that untreated sewage was rarely discharged directly into the water from central pipes, they admitted that residential septic tanks were overflowing and that defecating in the open remains common (as it does throughout India).
Known for its beaches, relaxed drinking laws and all-night parties, Goa receives around 12 percent of India's tourist trade.
