Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi reportedly has a "suicidal plan" to blow up Tripoli if the rebels take control of it, and says he will remain in power "until the last drop of my blood."
"The Libyan premier told me: If the rebels take over the city, we will cover it with missiles and blow it up," Russia's special envoy to Libya, Mikhail Margelov, told the Izvestia newspaper on Thursday, according to Haaretz.
The envoy, reportedly met with the Libyan prime minister on June 16 in Tripoli, said he believed the Libyan regime had "a suicidal plan," adding that Gaddafi "still has huge supplies of missiles and ammunition."
CNN reported on Gaddafi's public address Thursday in the western city of Ajeelat:
"We are ready to live without electricity, without benzene, without buildings, and without air conditioning," he said. "But our firearms are in our hands to fight until the end."
Meanwhile, he reportedly told an audience in an audio message broadcast nationwide over Libyan state television:
"I will remain with my people and with my firearm until the last drop of my blood. We will win over this unjust campaign. We will win over the campaign of colonization, the campaign of hatred."
Reuters reports that Britain, the lead member of a coalition enforcing a U.N.-mandated air campaign over Libya, is running short of military targets as Gaddafi's forces are using civilian infrastructure and vehicles.
Quoting a defense ministry source, Reuters reported that length of the bombing campaign had raised concerns that "coalition members, of whom many have cut defence spending to tackle budget deficits, will not be able to sustain the tempo of attacks."
