Four miners trapped underground in Wales

Divers have been sent into the flooded mine in Walses in which four miners have been trapped. A major rescue operation is currently underway. According to reports by the Daily Mail, a colliery tunnel within a coal mine has collapsed, trapping the miners at Gleison Colliery, Wales reports the BBC News.

It is believed that the men accidentally drilled through to an underground reservoir, causing thousands of gallons of water to flood into their tunnel.

Two other men were able to escape, while another man is in critical condition. Rescuers have not yet made contact, but they are optimistic that the men will be okay.

Chris Margetts, from West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said that water was being pumped out of the mine and oxygen would be pumped in.

"What we have determined is the miners are located approximately 90m underground," he said to the BBC. There should be numerous tunnels with airpockets, Margetts added.

Phil Davies, the superindent of South Wales Police said that "the situation is changing on a regular basis. We are doing everything we possibly can to get those four males out," to the Daily Mail.

The miners are all experienced, and are familiar with the layout of the mine and should know what to do in the situation. Relatives of the miners —Charles Bresnan, 62, David Powell, 50, Phillip Hill, 45, and Garry Jenkins, 39— are gathered at a community meeting point, where they can speak with specialists and police. They appeared, reports the BBC, to have prepared for a long night.
