Yale mulls adding sex change to health plan

Yale is considering adding sex change surgery to its health plan.

The move would make Yale the latest in a number of Ivy League schools to offer gender reassignment surgery free to students.

Yale’s Resource Alliance for Gender Equity (RAGE) has been pushing to have the surgery added to the health coverage plan for students, said Campus Reform.

“The [current] policy sends a message to trans and gender nonconforming students that our concerns are not a priority, not to mention its effect on students who need this care and rely on the Yale Health Plan for their health coverage,” said Gabriel Murchison, head of RAGE, reported the Yale Daily News.

The school has already offered the health service to employees.

In an email to Fox News, the school said, "The benefit is offered to faculty and staff, and is being considered for students."

"Cost would vary depending on treatment."

Thirty six colleges around the US offer the surgery but the number of students who use the service is unknown.

Fox News reported that the surgery costs about $25,000.
