Suicide blast kills 5 in upscale Karachi neighborhood

A suspected suicide blast in Karachi, Pakistan killed three suspected terrorists and two police officers near an under-construction park in a secluded spot in Karachi's upscale Sea View neighborhood, the AFP reported.

According to Dawn, a Pakistani English daily, the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah said the event was a cowardly act of terrorism which had been foiled by the police with great courage.

"We had intelligence information that suicide bombers were trying to enter Karachi to launch attacks in the holy month of Muharram and had accordingly alerted the police," Mansoor Wassan, Home Minister of Sindh said, the AFP reported. 

The police had signaled a car to stop at a checkpoint, but the driver sped away and police chased them. When police cornered the vehicle, its occupants blew it up.

One of the policeman, Maula Buksh died instantly, and another, Mumraiz Iqbal, died in the hospital due to injuries sustained during the blast, a senior police officer, Shaukat Hussain, said to AFP.

"We have found a suicide vest with explosives, hand grenades and other things from the wreckage of the vehicle," he said, Pakistan's English language newspaper the Express Tribune reported .

"We have also found some human limbs," Hussain said. Police are currently investigating if the limbs belonged to another suicide bomber.

According to BBC News, the militants were only meeting at this location as there is no residential area nearby.
