Stunning video from Etna eruption (VIDEO)

Mount Etna, Europe's highest volcano, erupted over Tuesday night, lighting up the sky.

Etna is one of the continent's most active volcanoes and had been simmering for nearly a year, said NASA.

Live Science noted that the most deadly eruption from Etna was in 1669 when it sent lava spewing onto the streets of Catania killing about 20,000 people.

Although this most recent explosion occurred in the middle of the night the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology arrived in time to record it (see video below).

NASA was also able to take stunning photos from space of the eruption (see photo).
