Neil Armstrong is recovering from cardiac bypass surgery

Neil Armstrong is recovering from cardiac bypass surgery Thursday, according to reports.

Armstrong, 82, had a stress test early in the week and was found to have four blockages in his arteries leading to his heart, said the Los Angeles Times.

Surgery was performed the next day.

There were few other details about the location of the surgery and about Armstrong's overall health.

Armstrong got well wishes from NASA after his surgery:

“Neil’s pioneering spirit will surely serve him well in this challenging time and the entire NASA Family is holding the Armstrong family in our thoughts and prayers,” a statement from the space agency read, according to the Petri Dish.

Armstrong was also given the regards of his fellow astronaut and companion on the moon, Buzz Aldrin, on Twitter, reported the Associated Press.

Success rates for the type of cardiac bypass surgery that Armstrong underwent is about 98 percent.

Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon during the famous Apollo 11 mission.

He spoke some of the most famous words in history: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
