Natalee Holloway's mother has sued the National Enquirer for what she describes as years of egregious lies.
Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005 on a class trip to the island of Aruba. Joran van der Sloot, a Dutchman, has long been suspected of kidnapping and murdering Holloway. He has never confessed to the crime, and is serving time for murdering another women exactly five years after Holloway's disappearance.
Holloway filed the lawsuit on Wednesday alleging that the magazine and its publisher, American Media Inc., published "false headlines, articles and statements" for nearly seven years, according to MSNBC.
Lin Wood, the attorney for Beth Holloway, told MSNBC they had no choice in filing suit. "This is a mother who has exercised every effort to make sure her daughter is alive."

The lawsuit cites several specific articles, including one that claims Van der Sloot had a "secret hand-drawn" map to Holloway's grave and published several accounts that they knew to be untrue according to Reuters.
The Associated Press obtained the lawsuit papers and cited, that Holloway accuses the Enquirer of "purposely avoided learning the truth by, among other things, failing to attempt to interview many individuals who could confirm or deny the things stated in the headlines, articles, and statements and captured in the photographs."
